Strange Roadtrip

Hearing nothing

My sister gave me my nephews' old computer, so now I'm saved! I drove to Chicago on Labor Day weekend to pick it upm but that little road trip turned out to have a strange twist of events.

One of my mother's best friends had wanted to move to Wichita. She lived in Chicago also, so we decided we'd pick her up and take her back with us. I've known this woman since I was really little. We used to visit her every weekend, when we lived in Chicago, to watch movies and goof around. I'd "pig-out" on pizza and play Commander Keen on her computer while her and my mother would talk into the wee hours of the morning. She had been pretty sick for a while after a surgery accident caused some problems with her bowel. Anyway, about two weeks before we went on the road trip she had also gained custody of a 2 year-old girl because her nephew and his girlfriend, the girl's father and mother, were on drugs and had abandoned her. When we arrived in Chicago and called her house we were told she had some complications right after we talked to her the night before and she had been rushed to the emergency room. We couldn't get a hold of her or her family for the next couple of days, but on our drive back home my mother got a call that she had died of internal bleeding.

I found it pretty shocking since we were just talking to her about moving here and getting an apartment that her and my mother could share...and now she's gone. At least, she doesn't have to suffer anymore though. I wonder what's going to happen to that little girl.
